Ask These Important Questions before Your Oral Cancer Surgery

An oral surgeon consulting his patient on her upcoming surgery. If your dentist and physician have made the diagnosis that you have oral cancer, the next step is to determine the right course of action for treatment.

In many cases, this will involve oral cancer surgery in order to remove the tumor and affected area, and it is crucial that you take the time to educate yourself about what you will experience.

Talk to Your Oral Surgeon about What to Expect

If you find that you will soon be having oral cancer surgery, it is common to feel nervous about the procedure. For this reason, you should have at least one consultation beforehand with your surgeon in order to learn more about the procedure and recovery.

You'll also have the opportunity to have your questions answered, and it is important that before you leave that meeting that you know the answers to some of the most common:

•  Is there a certain type of surgery that you recommend?
•  Will my lymph nodes need to be removed?
•  What is the ultimate goal of my surgery?
•  How long will I need to stay in the hospital after my surgery?
•  How will I feel after the procedure?
•  What is the recovery process like?
•  Are there any risks to this surgery that I need to know about?
•  Will I have scars as a result of the surgery, or will I look different?
•  Will I need to have teeth removed during the procedure, and if so, when and how can I replace them?
•  Will I need to have plastic or reconstructive surgery following my procedure, and if so, when can that be completed?

If you feel that you know the answers to these questions, you are likely ready for your upcoming surgery. If any other concerns arise before the date of your procedure, contact our office for more information.
