Are You a Dental Implant Candidate?

A woman receiving a dental exam which will determine if she is a candidate for dental implants in Barrie, OntarioDental implants are a highly popular treatment for replacing missing teeth. This unique treatment involves the use of small titanium posts that are surgically implanted into the jawbone to support ceramic crowns. The implants integrate into the bone, as the bone fuses to the posts. This secures them to the bone, and they are both stable and immobile. Implants provide numerous benefits. They look, feel and function just like natural teeth. They are much more comfortable than traditional treatments. They also stimulate the jawbone, preserving its strength and integrity. At Huronia Oral Surgery Group, we can help to determine if dental implants are the right solution for you.

Are You Missing Teeth?

Missing teeth is one of the most basic factors for determining your candidacy for dental implants. They can be used in some different situations, whether you are missing only one tooth, several teeth, or all of your teeth. Implants may also be discussed as a treatment if you still have all of your teeth, but you need to undergo tooth extractions.

How Old are You?

Older patients often think that they are too old for dental implants. You are never too old to enjoy the benefits that this revolutionary treatment has to offer. Whether you are in your 30s, your 50s, your 70s or older, the benefits are all the same. As long as you meet the other requirements for dental implant candidacy, it does not matter how old you are.

On the other hand, patients can be too young for dental implants. Implants are not ideal for children and teens. The jaw continues to develop all throughout childhood and the teen years, often ending in the late teens to early 20s. If an implant is placed in an immature jaw, developmental issues may occur. Children and teens who lose a permanent tooth will need an alternative treatment. Once the jaw has stopped growing, implants can be used to replace it.

Are You in Good Health?

To undergo surgery, you have to be in good health. Poor health increases your risk for complications, both during surgery as well as during your recovery period. Any oral health issues, such as tooth decay and gum disease, need to be treated before surgery. Chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes need to be under control. If you feel sick or like you have a cold coming on, you should call our office, as your illness may mean that your surgery needs to be postponed until after you are better.

Do You Use Tobacco Products?

Smoking, chewing tobacco, as well as any other types of tobacco products can affect the ability of your body to heal properly. These products limit oxygen levels in the blood. They also slow blood flow, slowing the delivery of essential nutrients needed for healing. These factors greatly slow the healing process, increasing the risk of infection. It is highly recommended that you quit using tobacco products altogether. If you cannot quit for good, you will need to at least be able to abstain from your surgery and through the recovery period.

What Does Your Jawbone Look Like?

Implants integrate into the jawbone. For this integration to be successful, you need to have sufficient bone mass in your jaw to fuse to the titanium posts. Without it, the implants will not integrate fully. They may be loose or fail altogether. Keep in mind that if you lack bone mass, this does not mean implants are out of the question. We can discuss options such as bone grafts to restore strength to the jaw. If you are missing an entire arch of teeth, you may also be a candidate for the All-on-4® Treatment Concept.

Dental implants are a unique treatment that can be used to treat some different tooth loss situations. For more information, and to find out if you a dental implant candidate, call Huronia Oral Surgery Group today at 705-302-0357.
