Before General Anesthesia InstructionsMaintaining your oral health is an important part of life, but it can also be a difficult process sometimes. This is perhaps especially true when you find yourself faced with the necessity of oral surgery, which is something that almost no patient wants to experience. With that said, do not spend your time worrying about the procedure – there is no point adding extra stress to your life, after all, and the fact of the matter is that at Huronia Oral Surgery Group, we are experts when it comes to maintaining your smile. It's also a good idea to keep in mind that if you have found this page, it means you probably will undergo general anesthesia for your procedure! This means that you will not experience any discomfort during the procedure whatsoever, and that it will be over in the blink of an eye! Before we start, however, there are some general guidelines you should follow. Here are some general instructions for what to do and what to avoid before general anesthesia. What can I eat and drink before going under general anesthesia?This is a good question! The answer is that you should not eat nor drink anything prior to anesthesia. More specifically, you should avoid all foods and liquids for at least six hours before your appointment time. This includes water! You do not need to fast for more than six hours ahead of the appointment time, but make sure that you do avoid eating and drinking in that six-hour window. Additionally, avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointed surgery time. If you take medication in the morning, it is okay to still take those. Make sure to take them at least two hours before your surgery time with a small amount of water. When you brush your teeth (which you can and should do), make sure to avoid swallowing any water or mouthwash. Should I take any medicine before coming in?With the exception of the aforementioned routine medication that you take every day, you should avoid taking any medicine before coming in. This includes aspirin as well as any other drugs that contain aspirin. You should avoid taking these for at least seven days before your surgery date. Speak with us if you are unsure as to whether or not this rule applies to you. Can I drive myself to my appointment?You should not drive yourself to your appointment as you will be unable to drive yourself home after undergoing general anesthesia. Additional GuidelinesAvoid wearing make up, perfume, or nail polish. Remember to remove your contact lenses before you come in for surgery! Make sure that you sign your consent form for anesthesia and the surgery itself. If you develop upper respiratory symptoms, you must call the office and reschedule your appointment!
