Preventing Dry Sockets

As we mentioned earlier, dry sockets occur rarely. In cases where dry sockets develop, there's usually some error on the patient's part.

•  Seek a reliable oral surgeon such as Dr. MacNicol, Dr. Jackson, Dr. Gater and Dr. Mokhtari and Dr. MacNicol, Dr. Jackson, Dr. Gater or Dr. Mokhtari for your dental extraction.
•  Avoid smoking for a couple of days leading to the surgery and even after as tobacco usually hinder clot formation, thus leading to dry sockets.
•  Inform your dentist if you are taking any routine medications they may interfere with post-op healing.

Treating Dry Sockets

When patients develop dry sockets, we may take a number of steps depending on the severity of their pain and dental condition. Typically, this includes prescribing painkillers to alleviate the discomfort. We will wash and clean the wound, especially if there is any debris lodged in the hole. Additionally, we may:

•  Apply a medicated paste to promote healing.
•  Give you an antibacterial gel or mouthwash to combat the risk of infection.
•  Prescribe oral antibiotics, especially if the socket is already infected.
•  Dress the wound to help with clotting.
•  Make a small incision to trigger your body’s natural response to heal the wound.
