Some Bad Habits Can Lead to Increased TMJ PainTemporomandibular joint disorder can affect people in different ways. For some it is a minor inconvenience that they can ignore.

For others, it is a condition that impacts the way they do things and can cause a great deal of pain. What many that suffer from TMJ do not realize is that some of the things they do can make the TMJ pain worse. Eliminating these bad habits could help them manage their TMJ better.

Nail Biting

People bite their nails for a variety of reasons from nervousness to doing it without even thinking about it. When you bite your nails, you jaw is doing things that are not natural for it. The unnatural way the aw moves can aggravate your TMJ and can cause more pain.

Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding often happens while you sleep. The stress it creates while you sleep will put pressure on your TMJ and will cause you to wake up with a sore and painful jaw. A mouthguard can help with this and can help anyone that grinds their teeth because of stress or anxiety while they are awake.

Teeth as a Can Opener
There is always someone at a party who will take the top off a bottle with their teeth to the oohs and aahs of the crowd. Anytime you use your teeth to open something, whether it is a bottle or bag of chips, you are stressing your jaw through the stress of unnatural movements.

Chewing on Hard Foods

Many enjoy chewing on ice or like the taste of a hard pretzel or a piece of candy without realizing how much stress they put on their jaw and teeth. That stress can aggravate the TMJ and lead to additional pain.
Whether you suffer from TMJ or not, these habits can all cause jaw pain.
