Does an Overbite Need Treatment?

Posted on 7/10/2019 by Tricia Ramsay
Does an Overbite Need Treatment? For teenagers, braces are a rite of passage. They are something that many young people use to correct a problem with their bite. The most common problem braces help with is an overbite. While the idea of fixing an overbite is very appealing, the process you have to go through is not something people want to do.

It takes time and effort and money to fix an overbite. For one reason or another some people wonder if they really need to treat their overbite.

The Importance of Treating an Overbite

While it is possible to leave an overbite untreated, there are many reasons that this is the wrong idea. There is a long list of things that an overbite can lead to when left untreated. It starts with the appearance. An overbite can affect the way you look and can affect your self-esteem. An overbite also affects the way that you bite and chew food. Some people with an overbite cannot enjoy all the foods they want.

In addition to those things, an overbite can also damage your oral health. It can lead to gum disease and it can make it difficult to maintain good oral hygiene habits. It can cause excessive wear on the teeth and the enamel of the teeth. People with an overbite are prone to problems with sleep apnea and TMJ.

Treatment is Easy
All the problems that an overbite can create should help convince a person to seek treatment, but it is not always enough. People do not like the idea of wearing braces they consider ugly and awkward. Fortunately, there are different choices for braces today, including braces that are not visible. It is easier than ever to correct an overbite and may not take as long as you think.
