When Talking with Us About Pain, Make Sure You Are SpecificWe have many different tools at our disposal to help diagnose any problems with your teeth and gums. We study constantly to learn more about your oral health. Despite all of this, we still need help if you are struggling with an oral health issue.

That is why we ask questions about how your oral health is. One of the questions we ask is if you are having any pain. The answer we get can help us figure out what to do for you.

Four Types of Pain

You may not realize it, but there are different types of pain. Describing the type of pain you have can help lead us to what the problem is. These are some ways to describe the pain you feel.

•  Temperature Sensitivity - This type of pain occurs when you something hot or cold goes over your teeth. Pay attention to how intense the pain is and how long it lasts. You should also pay attention to if it happens with something cold, something hot or both. This pain could signal worn down enamel, chipped or cracked teeth or gum recession.
•  Dull, persistent aches - This type of pain is not severe, but it does not go away either. It is more of a discomfort than painful. Minor pain could mean something is stuck between the teeth. Flossing could relieve it. Pain that goes down to the jaw could signal that you struggle with teeth grinding. Severe, persistent pain could mean an abscess is forming.
•  Inconsistent, sharp pain - If you have pain when you bite down that goes away quickly it could mean that you have a damaged tooth. Fractures of the tooth, tooth decay and wear could lead to this type of pain.
•  Intense, Throbbing pain - This is often accompanied by swelling around the area where the pain is. The pain can also radiate throughout the mouth. It is a sign of a serious infection. This is something to take care of as soon as possible.
