What to Do if Your Bottom Teeth Protrude in Front of Your Top Teeth?

Posted on 8/20/2018 by Tricia Ramsay
What to Do if Your Bottom Teeth Protrude in Front of Your Top Teeth?A class III in dentistry is where the lower first molar is anterior, meaning that it's located more towards the front of the mouth than the upper first molar.

A small percentage of the population has a lower jaw that is longer than the upper jaw, which causes a crossbite.

When the lower teeth protrude over the upper teeth and a crossbite is created, the upper teeth bites inside the lower teeth and this can cause chewing and aesthetic problems.

What Causes Lower Jaw Protrusion?

Lower jaw protrusion can be generic and run in families where the lower jaw is larger than the upper jaw. This can not only cause chewing and aesthetic problems, but it can be a blow to self-confidence and if untreated the protruding lower jaw can also create excessive wear on the enamel in the upper teeth.

How Can Lower Jaw Protrusion be Treated?

In general, it is best to wait until the patients are 18 years of age or older, when the jaw has developed fully. In some instances, it is best to start a treatment early because of self-confidence reasons, but whatever the case the most important thing to do is to get seen and treated to fix the problem.

The most common treatment for lower jaw protrusion is braces that can help align your jaw. This can be done with wire or lingual braces, which are invisible.

Other treatment methods that you can have access to if your bottom teeth protrude from your top teeth are an upper jaw expander, which is a wireframe device that fits across the palate and is operated with a key used to widen the expander a little bit every night.

A face mask that repositions the upper jaw back into the right place, using metal bands that are fastened to the upper back teeth can also be used to treat this condition.
