Oral Cancer Becomes More Normal Starting Around Age 20

Many people believe that oral cancer simply doesn't happen all that often. While this is a nice thing to believe, taking this point of view can result in complacency and ignoring symptoms that should be checked out by a professional.

We have been practicing dentistry for a long time, and we have seen many varieties of oral cancer. The good news is that oral cancer is highly treatable if you catch it early enough. The bad news is that many people are completely unaware of the signs of oral cancer and so lose valuable time in seeking attention because they don't even realize that they may have it.

Oral Cancer is Common in Adulthood

While perhaps not as common as some other forms of cancer, oral cancer does tend to be more common once a person hits adulthood. This could be due to any number of reasons; however, for purposes of this blog, the point is that you need to be vigilant and aware of the signs of oral cancer once you enter into adulthood.

Education is Key to Identification

Given the prevalence of oral cancer after age 20, and given how treatable it is if you catch it early, you owe it to yourself and your family to educate yourself as to the common signs of oral cancer. While no one sign is definitive evidence that you have oral cancer, knowing about the more common ones will increase your chances of noticing if something is off.

If you do suspect you may be developing oral cancer, it is important that you come see us as soon as you can. We will take a closer look and help make a definitive diagnosis. If you do end up having oral cancer, don't worry! We are very confident in our ability to treat it when we catch it early.
