How to Handle Tooth Sensitivity

Posted on 7/20/2016 by Tricia Ramsay
A man suffering from a sensitive tooth. One of the most common issues our patients have is tooth sensitivity. Most commonly tooth sensitivity occurs when trying to eat or drink something hot or cold.

Often the extreme temperature change can trigger an overwhelming sensation that will last several seconds or longer even after you have swallowed the drink or food.

Sometimes the sensitivity won't be triggered by temperature change, regardless of the cause, we want to help put a stop to your sensitive teeth!

Figure Out What's Causing Tooth Sensitivity

Is it just hot food and drink that cause the issue? Is it possible that you have been letting your oral hygiene routine slip a little bit? Maybe you've really doubled down on your oral hygiene and are brushing too vigorously. Note any changes to your habits and bring them to us!

Schedule an Appointment With Us!

Before buying that "sensitive tooth" toothpaste, give us a call at 705-302-0357 and schedule an appointment to have an examination. If there is a serious issue that will get worse with time (cavities for example) you don't want to ignore it.

Possible Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

Surprisingly enough one of the most frequent causes of tooth sensitivity is excessive brushing and flossing. Not to say that you should stop brushing and flossing, but be sure that you don't brush for more than a minute or two at a time.

Make sure that you aren't pressing hard while brushing your teeth and gums as that can cause gum recession. Always make sure to gently floss between teeth.

Less surprisingly, lack of regular brushing and flossing is also a big cause of tooth sensitivity. Cavities and inflamed gums can sometimes be caught in the early stages and treated fluoride and an increase in brushing and flossing.
