What Are the Earliest Signs of a TMD?The name is intimidating. No one wants to worry that they have Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. They may not know what it means, but it does not sound good.

No one will want this diagnosis, but there are people who have to live with it. They may not know they have it. It is time for people to learn the early signs of TMD. The sooner people face the problem, the easier it is to do something about it.

What is TMD

TMD is a condition that affects the joints and muscles found directly in front of the ears. These make it possible to move the jaw forward and sideways. TMD can cause severe jaw pain and make it difficult to open or close the mouth. Common causes of TMD including grinding of teeth and clenching of the mouth, jaw and teeth. There are several ways to treat TMD that include the use of pain medications, jaw exercises, bite guards or in rare instances, surgery.

Recognizing TMD

One of the first things that people notice about TMD is pain. The pain can last from a couple of days up to a week. The pain can occur in several places, including the jaw, in and around the ear and in the face. Some people experience a clicking sound as they move their jaw. They may also feel like their jaw locks up at times. People have a difficult time chewing or have pain when they chew if they suffer from TMD.

If you experience any of these symptoms, you need to contact a dental professional for further evaluation. The earlier you find out that you suffer from TMD, the sooner you can get treatment for it and the more effective the treatment will be.
