Oral Piercing Huronia Oral Surgery Group Ontario L4N 8J6While oral piercings are becoming increasingly popular and they are a fun form of expression, they come with some risks to your oral health that you should be aware of.

If you decide to get something like a tongue piercing done, you'll be dealing with additional health complications such as severe swelling or bleeding after the procedure is complete, and there's an increased risk of infection as well.

These are all issues that you need to be aware of before getting a piercing done so you can watch out for these complications.

The Most Common Oral Piercing Issues You Need to Know About

After getting oral piercings you can do damage to your gums and teeth potentially. An oral piercing can wear away the teeth and even cause them to chip or crack. It's also possible that they will damage fillings or crowns that you have on your teeth currently. The end result is damage to your teeth or gums that will need to be corrected.

Your gums can also be damaged from oral surgery in a few different ways. As gums rub the metal from a piercing they can be damaged and recede over time. This creates a less attractive looking smile and it also opens up the mouth to infection and makes it harder to clean properly.

Over time, your gums can be damaged seriously by oral piercings. A prime example of this would be infected scratches or cuts along the gum line.

If you have an oral piercing that is causing you pain, discomfort or problems, contact our office immediately and find out what we can do for you.

We can diagnose the problem and help you fix the issue before it becomes more serious. Not all piercings are problematic, but it's important to look over them closely because many can lead to trouble very quickly.
