Jaw pain is something some people have to deal with. However, there is such a thing as too much pain. If your jaw hurts regularly, it can be something that can significantly reduce your quality of life.

The best thing you can do if you struggle from jaw pain is to learn the cause of your pain, so you can figure out ways of keeping that pain away. If the pain gets to be too much, it is important that you go in and get checked out. It could spare you dealing with pain unnecessarily.

Common Causes of Jaw Pain

TMJ is the more common cause of jaw pain. This is when your jaw joint, also known as your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), isn't lined up perfectly, causing your jaw joint to hurt when you use it. This can be while eating, chewing gum, or speaking.

Abscesses can also cause jaw joint pain. This is an infection that can be in the tooth, or have spread to the jaw. If you have jaw pain that is accompanied by a fever, you need to go in and get checked out by your oral surgeon. They may need to perform a root canal in order to save the tooth, or if the tooth cannot be saved, they may need to extract the tooth.

Gum disease can also leave you struggling with jaw pain. This is one of the lesser known side-effects of gum disease, so most people don't connect it to the cause of their pain.

Pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong. The more you listen to your body, the quicker you can relieve your pain. If you have pain in your jaw, then go in and have your oral surgeon take a look. They may find that it is something easily treated!
