That Annoying Ringing in Your Ears can be Made Worse by TMJ Disorder

Posted on 6/20/2016 by administrative
A woman suffering from her ears ringing caused by tmj! That ringing in your ears that you hear (mostly) when things ought to be quiet is called tinnitus. Tinnitus can be brought on by a wide range of causes and conditions.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder can cause tinnitus in some people. TMJ disorder is a common oral malady that can cause a many different issues, from headaches to tooth grinding (bruxism).

How Will You Know?

If you have jaw pain or irritation there is a good chance that you suffer from TMJ disorder. Without professional consultation and examination there is no way to be 100% certain. Often TMJ is accompanied by a restlessness in the jaw and a feeling that there is no "right spot" for your jaw to sit. If a doctor has ruled out structural issues in the ear as the cause of your tinnitus we would encourage you to make an appointment with us for our oral surgeons to determine if the ringing in your ears is caused by TMJ disorder.

What Exactly is TMJ Disorder?

When there is a dysfunction in the TMJ due to dental issues or deformities it can cause TMJ disorder. The TMJ is where the lower jaw connects to the skull, right near the base of the ears. The joint and its surrounding tissue are responsible for all movement in the jaw, so anytime you eat or speak you are engaging the TMJ.

If something changes within your mouth, like tooth loss, or movement, or if you start to develop oral habits like tooth grinding, those changes can trigger TMJ issues. In turn, when the TMJ is irritated it can cause other structures within your skull and neck to change or become irritated. Your ears are located so close to the TMJ that they are frequently negatively impacted by TMJ issues.
