Can the Body Reject a Dental Implant?

At least, that is the way it is supposed to work, but many people become concerned that their body could actually reject the implant and that the entire procedure would be a waste.

Fortunately, the International Congress of Oral Implantologists have stated that rejection of the implant is rare, but that doesn't mean that the implant won't fail.

Why Might Dental Implants Be Rejected?

There is one major reason that the body might reject a dental implant, and that is due to a titanium allergy. Most dental implants are composed of titanium because it is both strong and biologically compatible. Statistically speaking, less than 1% of people who get dental implants will report that they have an allergy to titanium.

Why Might Dental Implants Fail?

There are several reasons why your new dental implants might fail. The first problem is bacteria, which we all have in our mouth. However, if your jaw bone has bacteria in it when the implant is put into place, it could spread to the implant and result in failure. Failure to properly care for your implant and to remove bacteria from around it can also cause the implant to fail.

If you have a habit of clenching or grinding your teeth, you might also experience failure. Grinding can cause the implant to shift or move into a different position, so if you have a habit of doing this while you sleep, you need to talk to your dentist about the availability of a night guard in order to keep your implants and your natural teeth safe.
