A dentist creating a bone graft for a patient.Did you know that you have the capacity to grow your own bone? It's true - with the help of your oral surgeon, you can grow your own bone that can be used to treat a variety of common oral disorders.

Find out more about how your body completes this awesome regeneration.

Why Might You Need a Bone Graft?

In the field of dentistry, there are several reasons that you might need more jaw bone. If you experienced an injury or lost your teeth, additional bone may be needed in order to restore your smile to its once beautiful state. That's where bone grafting comes in, as this surgery is used to replace bone by stimulating the natural ability of your body to regrow the tissue that was lost. This procedure is often done when a patient wants dental implants, but doesn't have enough jaw bone to support them, as grafting will help to provide the implants with a solid foundation.

What Happens during Bone Grafting?

When you have bone grafting surgery, a piece of bone will be removed from your jaw or some other part in your body. It is then transplanted into the jawbone, and your body uses it as a frame on which it is able to grow new bone. With time, the grafted bone will fuse and become a permanent part of the existing bone.

Bone grafting is both safe and effective. After your procedure you may be prescribed pain medication, and if you experience swelling, ice packs can be used. For the most part, patients are able to resume their normal activities on the following day.

Bone grafting is a natural process that allows your body to heal and rebuild itself. This surgical procedure can be a great way to improve your smile and your jaw, so please call our office to discuss the procedure in more detail.
