Recovering from Your Sinus Lift Procedure

A woman happy with her new smile after her sinus lift treatment. If you've recently undergone a sinus lift procedure - or if you have one coming up in the near future - you are likely anxious to get your dental implants put into place to restore your beautiful smile. First, you will need to recover from this procedure, as complete healing is necessary before you can have your implants put in.

After your procedure, it is important to allow the wound plenty of time to heal. Don't touch or disrupt it in any way or attempt to inspect the area to look at the sutures.

You should avoid brushing in that area, and you should even try not to rinse or spit vigorously for a couple of days so that the blood can clot. If you are a smoker, don't light up for a couple of weeks, as this will delay the healing process.

One extremely important tip to remember after your sinus lift surgery involves blowing your nose. Under no circumstance should you blow your nose for at least four weeks following your procedure. Sniffling is fine, but blowing your nose - or even sneezing while you hold your nose - is completely off the table. If you have to sneeze, do so with your mouth open.

If you have a vacation planned for immediately after your sinus lift surgery, there are a few activities that you'll want to avoid. Flying and scuba diving will both increase sinus pressure, so they should be avoided. If you are feeling ill while you are away, you can take decongestions like Sudafed and Dimetapp in order to reduce your sinus pressure.

Like with any dental procedure, unexpected symptoms can occur with a sinus lift procedure, although they are rare. If you notice any strange flow of liquids or air between your nose and mouth, you should let your oral surgeon know. If you have any other concerns about our sinus lift procedure, please be sure to contact our office.
